Dr.
J. Michael Burke
Dr. J. Michael
Burke is a native of Charleston, West Virginia. After attending West
Virginia University for his undergraduate degree he went to the Pennsylvania
College of Optometry in Philadelphia where he received his Doctor
of Optometry degree along with an award for clinical excellence. A
founding partner of Winston Eye Associates, Dr. Burke has resided
and practiced in Winston-Salem since 1979. He and his wife Diane have
two sons, Brent and Aaron. A graduate of UNC Chapel Hill Brent has
a doctorate in Organizational Psychology from Rutgers University and
currently works and resides in New Jersey. Aaron is a graduate of
N.C.State and is currently working towards a Doctor of Optometry degree
at the University of Alabama Birmingham. Dr. Burke loves to ski and
he and his wife are avid golfers. Dr. Burke has
been active in his professional life having served as President of
the Winston-Salem District Optometric Society for three years, and
President of the North Carolina Optometric Society in 2003-4. He has
also served as the North Carolina representative on the National Professional
Committee of Vision Service Plan (VSP), the nation's largest managed
vision care provider, for over twelve years also serving on their
Board Committees for two years. Currently he is a professional member
of the Winston-Salem District Optometric Society, the North Carolina
State Optometric Society, the American Optometric Association, the
American Diabetes Association, Prevent Blindness North Carolina and
the Contact Lens Section of the American Optometric Society. Dr. Burke enjoys
all aspects of patient care, including general eye care, the treatment
and management of glaucoma, management of diabetic patients and co-management
of cataract and refractive surgery patients with area surgeons. He
specializes in Contact Lens fitting, especially for those difficult
cases and patients that have experienced previous failures. After
more then 28 years of practice Dr. Burke looks at his patients as
his extended family. "I have seen many of my patients for so
long that we have literally grown up together. I now see the children
of patients that I once saw as children!" Still accepting new
patients he hopes that you too will enjoy the dedication to clinical
excellence and customer service by both doctors and staff in the relaxed
and friendly atmosphere that has become the trademark of Winston Eye
Associates.
Dr.
David H. Freeman
Dr. David Freeman was born and raised in Winston-Salem, and is a graduate of Mt. Tabor High School. He was a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor fraternity at Wingate College, where he graduated with honors with an Associate in Arts Degree. He then attended Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, graduating with honors with a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Optometry degree. At SCO, he was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa honor fraternity. Dr. Freeman then served in the United States Navy as a staff Optometrist at the Naval Regional Medical Center in San Diego, California. He was the Optometric clinic director at the branch clinic at Mirimar Naval Air Station. When his Navy duties were completed he returned to Winston-Salem and started a practice in Walkertown. He is one of the founding partners of Winston Eye Associates. He is married and has two sons. Dr. Freeman is a member of the American Optometric Association, the North Carolina Optometric Society, and the Winston-Salem District Society. He has served as president of the Winston-Salem District Society and also served on the Executive Council of the North Carolina State Optometric Society. He is also a member of the Contact Lens Society and Cornea Section of the American Optometric Association. Dr. Freeman practices full-scope optometry, including primary care, contact lenses, visual conditions of the elderly and dry eye management. He enjoys the one-on-one relationship between doctor and patient in our practice setting and looks forward to serving our community for many years to come.
Dr.
Rex H. Freeman Dr. Rex Freeman has been in practice since 1984 and with Winston Eye Associates since 1987. He was born in Winston-Salem and graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1975. He then attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte through 1979 and then transferred to Southern College of Optometry graduating in June 1983 with a Doctor of Optometry Degree. He performed his externship training at Womack Army Hospital at Fort Bragg. Dr. Freeman practices primary care Optometry which encompasses evaluation for Diabetes, Glaucoma, Cataracts and acute infections and injuries. He is experienced in contact lens and all refractive needs, including astigmatism and Presbyopia. He is also certified in Corneal Refractive Therapy, which is a non-surgical correction for Myopia (nearsightedness). Dr. Freeman is a member of the North Carolina State Optometric Society, the American Optometric Association and the Winston-Salem District Optometric Society. He currently resides in Kernersville with his wife Andrea and their daughter Kara.
Dr.
Carrie S. Weaver
Dr. Carrie Weaver has been with Winston Eye Associates since 1995, when she arrived fresh from optometry school. She is a native of Burnsville, North Carolina. She attended Duke University where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. She then attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry and received her Doctor of Optometry degree. At UAB, Dr. Weaver was a member of Beta Sigma Kappa academic honors society; and she served as President of SOSH, Students in Optometric Service to Humanity. Dr. Weaver and her husband, Mike, have one daughter, Haley. Dr. Weaver's favorite pastimes are always sports-related; she enjoys playing volleyball in recreation leagues and watching college basketball. She is a member of First Presbyterian Church, Winston-Salem. Dr. Weaver enjoys all aspects of primary eye care, including the diagnosis and treatment of ocular disease, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye syndrome, and diabetes. She is particularly interested in the areas of contact lenses, and pediatrics. Dr. Weaver enjoys taking time with her patients, and feels this is essential to providing the best care possible. She is a member of the American Optometric Association, the North Carolina State Optometric Society, and the Winston-Salem Optometric Society.
Dr.
Darren C. Decker
Dr. Darren C.
Decker is a North Carolina Licensed Optometrist who enjoys practicing
all aspects of modern optometry. He is highly trained in the clinical
diagnosis, treatment and management of ocular diseases and vision
anomalies. Dr. Decker provides comprehensive general and urgent eye
care for patients of all ages including contact lens fittings and
co-management of surgery patients. He evaluates and manages patients
for such conditions as dry eye, diabetes, glaucoma, cataract, and
macular degeneration. Dr. Decker is
a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and earned a bachelor's
degree in biological sciences from High Point University in which
he graduated Cum Laude and with All University Honors. He earned a
second bachelor's degree in visual sciences and doctorate degree from
Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia, PA, where he received
a Citation for Clinical Excellence in Primary Care at the Eye Institute.
His externship training included rotations at the Veterans Administration
Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware; Groat Eye Associates in Greensboro,
NC; and with local eye surgeons. He received Clinical Honors at each
of his externship sites. Dr. Decker has
been in the eye care business for over a decade, but not always as
a doctor. He has the unique perspective of working as an optometric
technician and optician prior to earning his doctorate and understands
the role of each highly trained staff member of Winston Eye Associates.
Dr. Decker resides in Lexington, NC with his wife Michelle. He is
a member of The American Optometric Association, the North Carolina
Optometric Society, and the Winston-Salem District Optometric Society. | |
